Group D is very finely poised as we enter the final round of group-stage fixtures. The Netherlands currently occupy the top spot in the group, but that could easily change depending on how they perform against Austria on Tuesday evening. The Dutch only sit above France thanks to goals scored, and Les Bleus face the already-eliminated Poland in their final group clash.

Although winning the group would be a welcome bonus, the priority for the Dutch is surely just finishing in the top two. They can achieve this by avoiding defeat against Austria, who sit in third place with three points. Austria would no doubt love to scupper these plans, but it may not be essential for its Euro survival. Depending on the results of other groups, Austria could still qualify even if it loses this match.

  • Location: Berlin
  • Stadium: Olympiastadion
  • Date: 25 June 2024
  • Kick-off Time: 17:00 CEST (18:00 BST)
  • Referee: Ivan Kru?liak (Slovakia)

The Netherlands’ poor luck with injuries prior to the tournament seems to have settled down. With Brian Brobbey fully recovered from a minor hamstring problem, Ronald Koeman will once again have a fully fit squad at his disposal, just as he did against France.

As an additional benefit, Koeman only has two players, Jerdy Schouten and Joey Veerman, who risk facing a yellow card suspension. Schouten could be rested due to this, although he is not much of a yellow card magnet. Other changes will be a consideration for Koeman, given the Dutch may well have already qualified for the last 16 ahead of kick-off.

There’s only one potential issue among Austria’s 26-man squad ahead of this match. Gernot Trauner, who opened the scoring against Poland, picked up an injury an hour into the match that forced him off. Florian Grillitsch was also pulled at half-time during the contest, but this appears to have been Ralf Rangnick’s tactical decision.

Rangnick made three changes to the starting eleven for the Poland match, so more tinkering here is to be expected. Resting all names facing a yellow-card suspension is not realistic, though, as seven players currently sit one card from a one-match ban.

Netherlands vs Austria H2H Record and Key Numbers

Concerning Austria, they lost their last seven matches against the Netherlands. This represents their longest active losing streak against a single opponent. The most recent of these defeats came in Euro 2020, although Austria still managed to finish second in the group.

The Dutch may find it tough to maintain their winning streak here. Austria’s defeat to France early in this tournament marks only their second loss since September 2022. The Dutch do not have quite such a strong record but have won seven of their last 10 matches, with France and Germany the only nations to deny them a win.

Possible Lineups

  • Netherlands (4-2-3-1): Verbruggen – Dumfries, De Vrij, Van Dijk, Aké – Wijnaldum, Reijnders – Frimpong, Simons, Gakpo – Depay
  • Austria (4-2-3-1): Pentz – Posch, Danso, W?ber, Mwene – Seiwald, Laimer – Wimmer, Baumgartner, Sabitzer – Gregoritsch

Prediction

It is easy to underestimate Austria, given that they have never gone far in an international tournament, but Rangnick has them playing extremely well. They may lack the big-name players the Dutch have, especially with David Alaba injured, but they are such a well-drilled team. Winning this game will likely be too much of an ask, but I can see them battling their way to a draw against a Dutch team that is not as strong as in previous Euros tournaments.
